My husband Theodorus should have been the happiest man in the world. He had everything he could wish for: wealth, a beautiful wife, (if you don’t mind me saying), and a wonderful son. We loved him dearly and we took great pleasure in living by the sea.
But poor Theodorus! Nothing made him happy. Now he’s spent all his money, and he must go to work. I have sent away the servants, and we have sold our fine horses. I do all the housework, and I wash all the clothes.
I haven’t reproached my husband. Fortune wasn’t all it was touted to be if it couldn’t make him happy.
