When I came into the house and I saw our sudden wealth, I knew it must have come at a price. My father told me, right away, what had happened. He had promised me to the Devil, in writing. In three years, he said, the Devil would come to claim me.
My father never stops weeping about it, but weeping will do me no good. I pray. Every day, I go out into the woods. I make a circle around me, and I pray to the Angel of the Lord.
Today, the Angel answered. A shining white Lady appeared before me, and took hold of both my hands. She said that though I may not be able to do anything at all about my fate, I will never belong to the Devil, nor ever walk alone.
