Maiden in the Dark

The drummer has taken my linen shift! My sisters have flown from the lake, and I am stranded here. I have to follow him. But I’m naked! I’ll keep myself hidden, but what else can I do? Without my linen I have no wings to fly back to the castle.

I follow him home and when night falls and he is going to sleep, I creep into his room and I whisper his name. “Drummer, drummer, wake up!” He wakes and sees me hovering over him in the dark.

“What do you want?” he asks.

“Give me back my dress that you took from me last evening by the lake.”

“I will give it back to you if you will tell me who you are.”

“I am the daughter of a mighty king, but I have fallen into the power of a witch, and am shut up on a glass mountain. I have to bathe in the lake every day with my two sisters, but I cannot fly back again without my dress. My sisters have gone away, and I am forced to stay behind. I beg you to give me my dress back.”

I never thought I would have to beg to go back to the witch!
